Jeon Eun-su, deputy spokesperson of the Presidential Office Cheong Wa Dae, was promoted to spokesperson, a Grade 1 senior secretary-level position, on Wednesday.
Lee Gyu-yeon, senior secretary for public communications at Cheong Wa Dae, visited the Chunchugwan press center to announce the appointment. Jeon's promotion from Grade 2 deputy spokesperson to Grade 1 spokesperson follows the vacancy left by former spokesperson Kim Nam-jun, who resigned in February to run in the Incheon Gyeyang-eul by-election for the National Assembly. Kang Yu-jeong, the current spokesperson, had her title elevated to senior spokesperson.
Jeon was born in Busan in 1984 and grew up in Ulsan. She graduated from Gongju National University of Education and worked as an elementary school teacher before enrolling at Pusan National University Law School, driven by a desire to contribute to local community development. She passed the fourth National Bar Examination and subsequently practiced law in the Ulsan area.
In 2024, she was recruited as one of the Democratic Party of Korea's "No. 7 talent" picks and received a strategic nomination to run in the Ulsan Nam-gu Gap district in the 22nd general election, but lost to Kim Sang-wook of the People Power Party. In May 2024, during President Lee Jae-myung's tenure as party leader, she was appointed as a nominated supreme council member succeeding Seo Eun-suk, then chairperson of the Busan chapter. She was named deputy spokesperson of the Presidential Office in June last year.
With the latest appointment, the Lee Jae-myung administration's Cheong Wa Dae has established a "three-spokesperson system" consisting of Senior Spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong, Spokesperson Jeon Eun-su, and Deputy Spokesperson An Gwi-ryeong.
