The Presidential Office announced Wednesday that Deputy Spokesperson Jeon Eun-su has been promoted to spokesperson. The promotion elevates Jeon from a Grade 2 deputy spokesperson to a Grade 1 secretary-level spokesperson, filling a vacancy left about two months ago when former Spokesperson Kim Nam-jun resigned to run in the Incheon Gyeyang-eul National Assembly by-election. Existing Spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong has had her title elevated to senior spokesperson.
A senior Presidential Office official told reporters the same day that the three-spokesperson system under President Lee Jae-myung's administration — comprising Senior Spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong, Spokesperson Jeon Eun-su, and Deputy Spokesperson An Gwi-ryeong — has now been firmly established.
Jeon was born in Busan in 1984 and grew up in Ulsan. After graduating from Gongju National University of Education and working as an elementary school teacher, she entered Pusan National University Law School out of a desire to contribute to regional development and passed the fourth national bar examination. She subsequently focused her career in the Ulsan area, campaigning to establish a branch of the Busan High Court at the Ulsan District Court to spare local residents the inconvenience of traveling for appeals trials.
Jeon was recruited as the Democratic Party of Korea's No. 7 talent pick in 2024 and received a strategic nomination for the Ulsan Nam-gu Gap district in that year's 22nd general election, but lost to People Power Party candidate Kim Sang-wook. In May 2024, when Lee Jae-myung was party leader, she was appointed as a nominated supreme council member succeeding Seo Eun-suk, the Busan chapter chairwoman. She was then named Presidential Office deputy spokesperson in June last year.
The three-spokesperson system has precedent. During the Moon Jae-in administration, the Presidential Office initially operated a two-person team with then-Spokesperson Park Su-hyun, now a Democratic Party lawmaker, and then-Deputy Spokesperson Ko Min-jeong, also now a lawmaker, before appointing Han Jeong-woo to form a three-person spokesperson team.
