
KF-21 launches! K-defense is now conquering the skies!
The rollout of the first mass-produced unit of the KF-21 "Boramae," Korea's indigenous supersonic fighter jet, is regarded as a watershed moment marking a qualitative leap in the nation's defense technology and production capabilities. Korea has evolved from a country dependent on foreign weapons to one that has entered the mainstream as a defense exporter capable of independent development and production.
President Lee Jae-myung said at the rollout ceremony held at Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday, "We will expand investment in advanced aviation engines and materials and components development to drive sustained growth in the defense industry." He added, "By possessing weapons that protect peace through our own technology and will, we have firmly established the foundation for self-reliant national defense." His remarks defined the KF-21 as a symbol of achieving self-reliant defense, beyond merely a weapons system.
The KF-21 is scheduled to receive its "final combat suitability" certification in the first half of this year and be delivered to the Air Force as early as September. An export contract for 16 units to Indonesia is also being pursued, creating a structure where force deployment and exports proceed simultaneously.
The Air Force plans to deploy an initial 40 units between 2026 and 2028, followed by an additional 80 units by 2032, for a total of 120 aircraft. This will replace the aging F-4 and F-5 fighter jets. The move signifies not just a reinforcement of military strength but an entry into a phase where self-reliant defense is being realized as actual military capability beyond mere declaration.

The KF-21 is a 4.5-generation fighter jet rated on par with the U.S. F/A-18, France's Rafale, and Europe's Eurofighter. While not a full fifth-generation stealth fighter, it incorporates some stealth design features, earning it the nickname "Baby Raptor." It reaches a maximum speed of Mach 1.81 and has a range of approximately 2,900 kilometers.
Korea is the eighth country in the world to successfully develop a supersonic fighter jet of 4.5-generation or above, following the United States, China, Russia, Japan, France, Sweden, and a European consortium comprising the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The KF-21 was developed by KAI together with the Air Force and the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) under the Korean Fighter Experimental (KF-X) program. With a total project cost of 16.5 trillion won ($12.1 billion), it is considered the largest defense buildup project in Korean history.
A program to develop the "Air-to-Ship Guided Missile-II" is also underway to enhance the KF-21's anti-ship strike capability. The missile is designed to fly at two to three times the speed of sound over a range of more than 300 kilometers to strike enemy vessels. However, the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses recently issued an opinion questioning the project's feasibility, suggesting development may take more time. Once completed, it could significantly expand maritime operational capabilities.
A key competitive advantage is the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. Known as the "eyes of the fighter jet," the domestically developed and installed system is considered highly significant. It can simultaneously detect and track multiple targets, a capability deemed essential in modern aerial combat.
In a contingency, the KF-21 is assessed as capable of simultaneously operating a diverse array of armaments, including two types of air-to-air missiles, 10 types of air-to-ground bombs, and 10 types of air-to-ground missiles. The Agency for Defense Development is also reportedly pursuing development of a high-speed air-to-air interception system capable of intercepting North Korean ballistic missiles during their boost phase immediately after launch.
The KF-21's development process was a series of near-impossible challenges. Since the start of system development in 2015, the program has successively cleared major milestones including the prototype rollout in 2021, the maiden flight in 2022, and breaking the sound barrier in 2023. Some 64,500 researchers and engineers participated in the process.
The mass production of the KF-21 is drawing expectations not only for national security but also for its industrial ripple effects. President Lee's assessment that "it is attracting interest from countries around the world based on its excellent performance, low maintenance costs, and high scalability" reflects the same context. As a fighter jet is an advanced manufacturing system comprising tens of thousands of components, an industrial ecosystem spanning production, maintenance, repair, and exports can begin operating in earnest.
The global market is also responding. Export negotiations with Indonesia are underway as the issue of unpaid cost-sharing contributions shows signs of partial resolution. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are also reviewing the possibility of acquisition. Some countries are reportedly discussing cooperation frameworks that go beyond simple purchases to include joint production and technology transfer.
President Lee said, "Following the defense competitiveness proven by the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the Cheongung missile, we are now independently producing fighter jets," adding, "We have now established a foundation as a powerhouse in the defense and aerospace industries." He continued, "We will further enhance K-defense competitiveness by sharing not only weapons systems but also technology and development experience with partner nations."
