Jung Won-oh, a preliminary candidate in the Democratic Party of Korea's primary for the June 3 local election Seoul mayoral race, visited the grave of the late former President Kim Dae-jung on the 9th, launching his official campaign activities. Jung, former Seongdong District Mayor, declared he would "build Seoul's future competitiveness with the spirit of Kim Dae-jung."
Jung paid respects at former President Kim's grave site at Seoul National Cemetery in Dongjak District that morning. This was his first official schedule ahead of his candidacy announcement, which was released via YouTube video the same day. He was accompanied by Democratic Party lawmakers Chae Hyun-il, who serves as his campaign headquarters chief, and Park Min-gyu.
In the guestbook, Jung wrote: "With visionary insight ahead of its time, I will open Seoul's future with the spirit of Kim Dae-jung."
Speaking to reporters afterward, Jung said, "I paid respects here today to convey my commitment to inheriting the visionary insight and spirit of former President Kim, who made Korea an IT powerhouse, and to build Seoul's future competitiveness in this era of great AI transformation."
Regarding the Democratic Party's Seoul mayoral primary, Jung stated, "Setting aside personal advantages or disadvantages, elections must be conducted according to fair rules," adding that he would "faithfully comply with decisions made by the party's election management committee."
