Korea's Cheongung-II Achieves 96% Hit Rate in Combat Debut in UAE

South Korea's indigenously developed medium-altitude surface-to-air missile system Cheongung-II achieved a 96% hit rate during its first combat deployment in the United Arab Emirates against Iran's large-scale missile attacks, marking the first time a Korean-made air defense system has demonstrated such performance in major combat operations.

Rep. Yoo Yong-won of the ruling People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee, said Monday that according to sources familiar with UAE interceptor missile operations, the Cheongung-II developed with Korean technology was confirmed as the core capability behind the UAE's over 90% defense success rate.

"Two Cheongung-II batteries deployed in the UAE fired interceptor missiles at targets during this engagement, with 96% accurately intercepting their targets," Yoo explained. He added that while it remains unclear whether all 64 interceptor missiles from the two batteries were used, approximately 60 missiles appear to have been launched.

Experts note that even the MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3, considered among the world's top air defense systems, struggles to exceed 90% intercept rates in large-scale complex attack scenarios. Defense difficulty increases significantly when drones and maneuvering ballistic missiles arrive simultaneously, making Cheongung-II's 96% combat hit rate world-class, analysts say.

The Patriot PAC-3 MSE has a maximum intercept altitude of 40 kilometers, compared to Cheongung-II's 20 kilometers, and a maximum range of 90 kilometers versus Cheongung-II's 50 kilometers. However, actual combat intercept performance can vary significantly depending on system operation capabilities and engagement conditions.

"Cheongung-II recording over 90% intercept success in intense Middle East combat conditions represents an achievement of Korean defense science and technology," Yoo said. "It is also significant that the Cheongung-II deployed by the UAE is the same variant currently operated by the South Korean military."

The UAE currently has two Cheongung-II batteries deployed. Each battery consists of a multifunction radar, an engagement control station, and four mobile missile launchers. Each launcher can carry up to eight interceptor missiles.

Cheongung is a Korean medium-range surface-to-air guided weapon system developed with domestic technology, divided into Block-I for aircraft interception and Block-II with enhanced ballistic missile intercept capability.

The Cheongung-II acquired by the UAE can intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes of approximately 15 to 20 kilometers using a hit-to-kill method. The system is also capable of launching interceptor missiles in all 360 degrees, enabling simultaneous engagement of multiple targets.
