President Lee Jae-myung hosted senior advisors from the Democratic Party of Korea at Cheong Wa Dae for a luncheon on January 25, his first such meeting since returning to the presidential residence.
"The president's role is not to take sides with any particular group but to govern by unifying everyone," Lee said during the gathering.
The luncheon brought together party elders including standing advisors Kwon Roh-gap and Lee Yong-deuk, former Prime Ministers Han Myeong-sook and Chung Sye-kyun, former National Assembly Speakers Kim Won-ki, Im Chae-jung, Moon Hee-sang, Kim Jin-pyo, and Park Byeong-seok, and former Unification Minister Chung Dong-young.
Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs Hong Ik-pyo, Senior Secretary for Public Communications Lee Kyu-yeon, and Presidential Advisor for Political Affairs Rep. Cho Jung-sik also attended.
The meeting marked the first time Lee met with the advisory group since August 21 last year, approximately six months ago.
"Since returning to Cheong Wa Dae, many things seem to be stabilizing," Lee said. "I am relieved that the Democratic Party's new administration has produced visible results early on, allowing citizens to experience significant changes."
Lee emphasized the importance of delivering tangible improvements to citizens' lives. "Governance is ultimately about creating a better environment that people can actually feel through real change," he said.
On the topic of national unity, Lee acknowledged ongoing challenges. "Until the election, I won as a representative of one side, but from that moment forward, I must govern by bringing everyone together," he said. "I still fall short in this regard, but I will continue striving for unity."
The president requested advice from the senior advisors, citing their extensive experience and wisdom. "I should have invited you sooner. I regret the delay and apologize," Lee said. "I promise to meet with you frequently going forward."
Lee also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, who passed away on December 25. "I am grateful to see you all in good health. It would have been wonderful if former party leader Lee Hae-chan could have been here as well," Lee said, pausing momentarily before continuing. The late former prime minister had attended the previous advisory luncheon in August.
