The Russian Embassy in South Korea stated that a banner reading "Victory is ours" refers to victory over Germany and follows common diplomatic practice.
"Displaying banners and promotional materials within embassy premises is standard practice," the embassy said on Feb. 23. "Last year, we posted a banner commemorating the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. This banner was installed to mark Russian holidays including Diplomat's Day and Defender of the Fatherland Day."
Regarding the banner's message, the embassy said it is "a phrase familiar to Russian people" that is "connected to various glorious moments in Russian history, including the mobilization of Soviet people for victory over fascist Germany."
The embassy emphasized that "displaying such banners contributes to strengthening patriotic solidarity among Russians" and that "considering the historical context mentioned above, we do not believe it offends anyone's feelings."
The embassy added that "since this structure was not intended for long-term installation, the banner was always scheduled to be removed after the commemorative events conclude."
