President Lee Jae-myung sent a message of support on January 21 to the South Korean short track team after their medal wins at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, saying, "World's best South Korean short track—I'm truly proud."
"The weekend began with joyful news," Lee wrote on his Facebook page. "I sincerely congratulate the men's 5,000m relay team on their silver medal, and Kim Gil-li on her gold and Choi Min-jung on her silver in the women's 1,500m."
"I send warm applause to Hwang Dae-heon, Lee Jung-min, Lee Jun-seo, Lim Jong-eon, and Shin Dong-min, who captured the silver medal in the men's 5,000m relay," Lee said. "Following the women's relay medal, the men's relay added another, once again proving that South Korea is the world's best."
"The women's 1,500m race was also remarkable," he continued. "Kim Gil-li claimed three medals at this Olympics and stood atop the podium once again. Her future is even more exciting to watch."
Regarding Choi Min-jung, who won silver in the same event, Lee noted, "She set a new record as the Korean athlete with the most Olympic medals at seven." He added, "Her journey of anchoring the national team with unwavering skill and indomitable spirit at every competition is itself a proud chapter in South Korean sports history."
Lee also emphasized the government's commitment to supporting athletics. "The government will actively support our athletes so they can train in a stable, systematic environment and fully demonstrate their abilities," he said. "We will further strengthen the foundation for them to compete confidently on the international stage."
"I hope you continue to elevate South Korean sports while staying healthy and injury-free," Lee told the national team. "I will always be cheering for you."
