South Korea's ruling and opposition parties have finalized the formation of a special committee to process the US Investment Special Bill, responding to pressure from Washington over tariff increases.
The People Power Party (PPP) confirmed seven members for the special committee on US Investment legislation, according to Seoul Economic Daily on Thursday. The roster includes two lawmakers each from the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee, Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee, and Political Affairs Committee.
Rep. Kim Sang-hun, former PPP policy committee chairman, was appointed as the committee chair. The six other PPP members are Reps. Park Sung-hun and Park Soo-young from the finance committee, Reps. Kang Min-kuk and Kang Myung-gu from the political affairs committee, and Reps. Kang Seung-gyu and Park Sang-woong from the trade and industry committee.
"The special committee composition has been finalized. Two lawmakers from each of the three standing committees have been included," a PPP leadership official said.
The committee formation follows a memorandum of understanding between South Korea and the United States covering $200 billion in strategic industry investments and $150 billion in approved shipbuilding sector investments. Eight versions of the US Investment Special Bill have been submitted since November last year to implement the agreement, but deliberations were delayed due to confirmation hearings and scheduling conflicts.
US President Donald Trump recently pressured South Korea's legislature over the delayed passage, prompting bipartisan action. The National Assembly passed a resolution Thursday to establish the special committee following an agreement reached May 4 between floor leaders Han Byung-do of the Democratic Party of Korea and Song Eon-seok of the PPP.
The 16-member committee comprises eight Democratic Party lawmakers, seven PPP members, and one from non-negotiating blocs. The committee's mandate expires June 9, with both parties aiming to pass the legislation by early next month.
