Modern people living in a "minute-and-second society" race against every minute and second to maximize the efficiency of their time. Beyond simply moving busily, juggling multiple tasks while dividing time into minute-by-minute units has now become routine.

This "time-efficiency"-centered social trend is reflected directly in the field of education, pressuring children to pursue only faster acquisition and efficient outcomes. Yet the point we truly need to consider is not speed but direction.

In this era of great transformation, where artificial intelligence (AI) replaces and supplements human intelligence, what our children need is not knowledge buried in a single field, but to grow into "multipotentialite" talents who integrate the potential of multiple fields to create new value.

A multipotentialite is a concept proposed by American writer Emilie Wapnick, referring to a person who, rather than insisting on a single path, exercises versatile potential across various fields. These individuals generate creative ideas at the intersection of different concepts and demonstrate exceptional ability in solving the complex and multidimensional problems of modern society. For our children to be reborn as such future-oriented talents, parents' educational philosophy must first fundamentally change.

The Blinders Called Study, and the Scenery Hidden Behind Them

The reason blinders are placed on a racehorse is solely to make it run looking only forward. Today's exam-oriented education resembles this. It covers children's eyes so they cannot see any scenery other than the narrow path of grades and college admissions. But the era of the single-minded specialist who digs only one well is fading. Now the key to survival is the realm AI cannot imitate—the ability to connect and fuse different fields to create new value. The virtue most needed by a multipotentialite talent is the flexible adaptability shown when facing an unfamiliar environment. We hope our children walk only smooth paths without mistakes, but true growth begins only when they stumble over an unexpected obstacle. A child who fears failure will never explore a new world. When parents view failure not as something to reprimand but as "precious data for growth," the child finally gains the inner strength to lead situations rather than be swayed by their environment. The conflict and reconciliation experienced through volunteering in unfamiliar places, encountering an instrument for the first time, or doing a team project for the very first time become the most precious assets that strengthen a child's character.

The Power of Questions Drawn Up From Silence

The stimulating information pouring out from digital devices halts children's contemplation. Where contemplation stops, questions do not arise. Without essential questions such as "Who am I?" and "What do I learn for?", no amount of knowledge is merely a castle built on sand. We must step away for a moment from the noise of the minute-and-second society and allow time for quiet silence. When a child gazes inward and poses questions to themselves, those questions become seeds of creative ideas that change the world. Parents must wait so that the child does not remain a consumer of information, but becomes a being that produces new value through reflection.

Education is not a process of forcibly filling in a child's deficiencies, but a process of trusting the "hidden potential" that already exists within the child.
