▲The People Power Party's Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on January 9 descended into chaos once again. Supreme Council members running for metropolitan governor positions voiced their grievances, turning the meeting into what resembled a public denunciation session. Supreme Council member Yang Hyang-ja, who applied for nomination as Gyeonggi Province governor candidate, criticized the additional open recruitment for Gyeonggi Province as "bizarre and utterly strange." Supreme Council member Kim Jae-won, currently in the primary race for North Gyeongsang Province governor candidate, also raised suspicions surrounding his competitor, incumbent Governor Lee Cheol-woo. The party leadership held a ceremony at the National Assembly that day to commemorate "surpassing one million registered party members," but the celebration was overshadowed by the nomination dispute. When will the internal strife of the main opposition party ever end?
▲At the National Economic Advisory Council plenary meeting presided over by President Lee Jae-myung on January 9, Park Won-ju, head of the Strategic Economic Cooperation Division, proposed "utilizing nuclear power" for energy supply stability. Park, who served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Economic Affairs during the Moon Jae-in administration, argued that "maintenance schedules should be adjusted to maximize nuclear plant operations this winter." He also recommended establishing grounds for temporarily extending operations of nuclear plants that have reached the end of their design lifespan. It feels like a different era to hear such arguments from a former key Blue House aide who served during the Moon Jae-in administration, which actively pursued phasing out nuclear power.
