The South Korean government is drawing up a long-term future strategy to prepare for the era of superintelligence, which surpasses human intelligence.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) held the launch ceremony for the '2045 Science and Technology Frontier Strategy Committee' on Thursday. The move marks the first step toward establishing a long-term national science and technology future strategy targeting 2045.
The strategy committee, composed of experts from industry, academia, and research institutes, is divided into a general committee and eight subcommittees. The general committee will be co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) President Lee Kwang-hyung, who will be responsible for coordination and advisory roles across the overall strategy establishment. The eight subcommittees consist of the fields of future design, superintelligence and hyperconnectivity, life and medicine, climate, environment and energy, future mobility, space and deep sea, future materials and manufacturing, and innovation policy.
The MSIT plans to begin full-scale operation of each subcommittee starting with this launch ceremony. It plans to release an interim strategy within this year and to unveil the final strategy in April 2027, the 60th anniversary of the nation's science and technology.
"We cannot navigate without a compass amid the waves of massive technological change," Bae said. "We will do our best to prepare the next 20 years of Korea's science and technology by gathering the wisdom of top experts in each field."
