
Hyundai Motor Group's (005380.KS) sales of eco-friendly vehicles last month rose 62% from a year earlier, marking a record high. Amid the strong eco-friendly car sales, the group's overall sales also increased 2.7%.
Hyundai Motor and Kia (000270.KS) sold 174,860 vehicles in the US market in May, up 2.7% from a year earlier, the companies said Wednesday.
Hyundai Motor sold 94,358 units, including the Genesis brand, a 3.4% increase from a year earlier. Kia sold 80,502 units, a 1.9% gain.
Eco-friendly vehicles drove the increase in Hyundai Motor Group's US sales. Hyundai and Kia's eco-friendly vehicle sales in May totaled 52,693 units, up 62.3% from a year earlier, marking a record high. Eco-friendly vehicles accounted for 30.1% of total sales.
Hybrid vehicle sales reached a record 52,693 units, up 74.4% from a year earlier. Electric vehicle sales also rose 22.4% to 9,301 units.
By model, Hyundai's top sellers were the Tucson with 20,581 units, the Elantra with 16,819 units, and the Palisade with 13,089 units. For Kia, the Sportage led with 18,405 units, followed by the Telluride with 13,665 units and the K4 with 12,592 units.
