The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) will conduct intensive safety inspections at construction sites nationwide from the 4th through the end of July to prevent accidents during the monsoon season, the ministry said Tuesday.
The inspections will cover approximately 3,000 construction sites across the country, with 12 organizations participating, including MOLIT, regional construction management offices, public institutions, and private-sector experts.
Key inspection items include the adequacy of monsoon safety management and flood prevention measures, the maintenance of drainage systems, preemptive measures for vulnerable facilities such as embankments and retaining walls, the management of cut and fill slopes, whether concrete is being poured during rainfall, and countermeasures against strong winds, including measures to prevent tower cranes from toppling. In particular, high-risk processes such as earth retaining works, excavation, cut-and-fill operations, and drainage works will be jointly inspected with private-sector experts to enhance the effectiveness of the inspections.
Special inspections will also be conducted in parallel at other construction sites operated by builders that recorded fatal accidents in the first quarter of this year, urban excavation sites deeper than 10 meters, and sites ordered by public institutions. If violations such as substandard construction or inadequate safety and quality management are detected, the ministry plans to take action under relevant laws, including the imposition of penalty points and fines and referral for investigation.
