Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party candidate for Seoul mayor, said Wednesday that vote counting should be suspended until preliminary measures are completed for areas where voters were unable to cast ballots due to a ballot shortage at some polling stations in Seoul.
"Vote counting must be halted until preliminary measures are completed for areas where voters could not cast ballots due to the ballot shortage," Oh said in a statement.
"Voting is still underway in some areas. Some people reportedly went home without voting," he said.
"Not a single citizen's right to vote should be infringed upon," Oh added. "The National Election Commission must take responsible preliminary measures to restore the voting rights of affected citizens."
Earlier in the afternoon, voters were left waiting at several polling stations in Seoul's Gangnam, Gwangjin and Songpa districts after ballots ran short. At the Jamsil-dong 7-2 polling station, the closing time was extended until 10 p.m. for voters who had received waiting tickets.
Oh's camp characterized the incident as an infringement of citizens' voting rights and stressed that follow-up measures by the election commission must be taken first.
