KT is introducing an external expert advisory system for personal information protection, aiming to strengthen its prevention-oriented data management capabilities.
KT said Friday it has established a "Privacy Advisory Committee" to respond to changes in the personal data processing environment driven by advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the expansion of data-based services. The committee will be launched and begin full operations within this month.
The committee aims to restore customer trust and build a responsible data utilization ecosystem. It will be tasked with proactively reviewing risk factors at every stage of personal data processing and upgrading protection systems. The committee will provide advisory input on key tasks including: measures to fulfill obligations and strengthen accountability as a personal data processor; the security of personal data and the appropriateness of data utilization; and the enhancement of systems for preventing data breach incidents and their recurrence.
The inaugural advisory members include experts from diverse fields such as policy and law, technology and security, industry and services, and ethics and user protection. Those invited include Yeom Heung-yeul, professor emeritus at Soonchunhyang University's Department of Information Security; Lee Hee-jung, professor at Korea University Law School; Ryu Jae-cheol, professor at Chungnam National University's School of Computer Science and Engineering; Son Ki-wook, professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology's Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Shim Sang-hyun, secretary general of the Korea CPO Forum; and Kim Kyung-ha, CEO of J&Security.
"In the AI era, securing customer trust in personal information protection is just as important as innovation in data utilization," said Kim Chang-oh, head of KT's Personal Information Protection Group (CPO and executive director). "Through close cooperation with external experts, we will build a global-level personal information protection system and create a data trust environment where customers can feel secure."
