The Korea Intellectual Property Office said Thursday it will establish the Intellectual Property AI Transformation Task Force, a dedicated organization to oversee its AI transformation (AX) efforts.
The newly created task force will carry out three core missions. First, it will review and revise intellectual property laws and regulations, and re-establish related standards in line with the AI transformation. The task force will monitor AI-related developments at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and in major economies including the United States and Europe. It will also research ethical guidelines that should be observed when AI is introduced to the public and private sectors in the IP field, closely review the need to amend IP-related laws and regulations, and pursue legislation.
Second, the task force will develop an IP-AX strategy to build an AI-friendly intellectual property administrative system. To advance AX in the IP field in line with government policies such as the AI Action Plan announced by the National AI Strategy Committee, the task force will identify administrative and public service tasks within the IP sector where AI can be introduced. It will also provide education and capacity-building programs to enhance the AI literacy of internal staff.
The task force will support business model design and service development so that IP service companies can offer advanced patent and technology search, corporate analysis, and judgment prediction services using IP big data and AI. It will also support the opening of widely usable AI training data to this end.
Through the new organization, the Korea Intellectual Property Office expects to proactively establish an IP-AX strategy and risk response measures, enabling it to pursue active IP-AX policies from a mid- to long-term perspective.
