A driver recently engaged in road rage and assaulted a postal worker delivering mail on a road in Seoul, authorities said. Korea Post condemned the incident, calling it "a clear illegal act to assault a mail carrier performing official duties" and urging punishment.
Korea Post, under the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), expressed deep regret on Tuesday over the recent assault on a mail carrier performing official duties in the Seoul area and called for strong punishment by investigative authorities. On November 21, a mail carrier identified as A was delivering mail on a motorcycle and waiting at a traffic signal at an intersection. A driver then exited his vehicle, knocked over the carrier's motorcycle and assaulted him. The mail carrier is currently receiving outpatient treatment following sick leave and is undergoing psychological counseling to ease the mental trauma.
"Mail carriers are frontline public workers who deliver citizens' valuable mail and administrative services even amid heat waves, heavy rain and cold snaps," Korea Post said. "Violence against public officials performing their duties is an act that threatens society as a whole, undermining public services and causing inconvenience to citizens."
Park In-hwan, head of Korea Post, visited the post office on November 27 to console the injured mail carrier. "Acts of harm against mail carriers performing official duties can never be tolerated," Park said. "Active cooperation from all citizens is needed to ensure the safety of mail carriers who deliver citizens' valuable mail."
