Samsung SDS has secured additional reseller rights for OpenAI's "ChatGPT Edu," the company said Thursday.
ChatGPT Edu is a service designed for educational institutions such as schools and publishers. It is built so that conversations and responses exchanged by users, including teachers and students, are not used as training data for artificial intelligence (AI), strengthening data privacy and security. Powered by the GPT-5 language model, the service provides features including text comprehension and generation, coding, data analysis, web browsing, document summarization, and customized chatbot creation.
OpenAI designed ChatGPT Edu based on experience from major global universities that have used ChatGPT Enterprise. It is currently deployed at institutions including the University of Oxford, the University of London, the Wharton School, and the National University of Singapore.
Through this partnership, Samsung SDS plans to expand the service to schools, publishers, and educational organizations seeking to adopt generative AI for education and research. The company is currently conducting a proof of concept (PoC) to provide ChatGPT Edu to Korea National Open University, a state-run institution with approximately 90,000 students, professors, and staff. The two sides plan to discuss adoption after the PoC.
Samsung SDS became the first Korean company to sign an OpenAI reseller partner agreement in December last year, and has since provided customized AI transformation (AX) strategies. The company is building an end-to-end AX framework based on a support system spanning AI consulting, development and operations, and cloud and security. It offers integrated support across the entire process, from initial strategy development to AI full-stack design, adoption, enterprise-wide expansion, and operational enhancement. Leveraging its proprietary cloud services and capabilities in operating graphics processing unit (GPU)-based AI infrastructure, Samsung SDS provides a stable service environment. The company also plans to support the high level of data protection required by educational institutions through its security and data management capabilities.
Building on this foundation, Samsung SDS has recently signed a series of ChatGPT Enterprise supply contracts with companies representing major domestic industries, strengthening its leadership in the corporate generative AI market. Recent contracts include deals with Nexen Tire and other leading companies in the public, financial, manufacturing, retail, and services sectors.
"Through ChatGPT Edu, we expect an environment in which generative AI can be used more safely in educational settings, and the user experience will also spread rapidly," said Lee Jung-hun, executive vice president and head of strategic marketing at Samsung SDS. "Based on continued cooperation with OpenAI, Samsung SDS will strengthen its role as an AX partner that designs, expands, and supports corporate AI operating systems, going beyond that of a simple reseller."
