Samsung Display, a leader in the premium monitor market, has surpassed 5 million cumulative shipments of its quantum dot organic light-emitting diode (QD-OLED) panels, approximately four years after beginning mass production.
Samsung Display announced Wednesday that its QD-OLED panels for monitors reached the 5 million cumulative shipment milestone in March. Since becoming the world's first company to mass-produce QD-OLED in late 2021, the company has recorded explosive growth averaging over 320% annually. The achievement comes less than two years after surpassing 1 million units in May 2024, demonstrating rapidly rising demand for self-emissive monitors.
QD-OLED is an innovative technology incorporating quantum dots, semiconductor particles measured in nanometers. The technology delivers overwhelming color accuracy and high brightness by producing pure colors without separate color filters. Gamers and professionals have praised the technology for its wide viewing angles and excellent response times that provide sharp image quality without screen ghosting.
According to market research firm Omdia, self-emissive panels are expected to account for 41% of the premium market segment priced above $500 this year, up from 22% in 2024. Samsung Display has expanded its reach by partnering with 20 global tech giants including Dell, HP, and Samsung Electronics to launch more than 150 monitor models.
The company continues to widen its technological lead. This year's new products feature the "V-Stripe" pixel structure for enhanced readability and "QuantumBlack™," a new ultra-low reflection, high-strength film technology that maximizes immersion. Based on these technological capabilities, the company solidified its dominant position with a 75% market share in the self-emissive display market last year.
"This result was achieved through our unrivaled picture quality competitiveness and stable production capabilities," said Son Dong-il, Executive Vice President and Head of the Large Display Business Unit. "We will change the landscape of the monitor market and lead the technological transition with our differentiated technology."
