Professor Shim Woo-young of Yonsei University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been selected as the April recipient of the Korea Science and Technology Award, hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and jointly organized by the National Research Foundation of Korea and The Seoul Economic Daily.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation announced on the 8th that Professor Shim was chosen as the award recipient ahead of Information and Communications Day on the 22nd, recognizing his development of semiconductor materials with novel structures not found in nature, which has strengthened the global competitiveness of Korea's semiconductor technology. Professor Shim is an authority in multidimensional materials research, including two-dimensional semiconductors and nanomaterials. His research is regarded as foundational technology for next-generation low-power AI semiconductors and neuromorphic computing, as it can significantly reduce the energy consumption required for artificial intelligence computation.
This research was supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT's "Future Materials Discovery Project," and the findings were published in the international journal Nature Materials in October 2024, gaining attention for their academic innovation and practical application potential. ▷Full story on Page 14
