HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (009540.KS) has secured orders for two additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. With this latest contract, HD Hyundai Samho has successfully won orders for 14 ships this month alone.
HD Korea Shipbuilding announced on the 8th that it received orders on the 7th from Sonangol Shipping Holdings for two 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers worth a total of 770.2 billion won ($565 million). The vessels will be built by HD Hyundai Samho and delivered to the shipowner by the second half of 2029.
LNG carriers are among the highest-value vessels in shipbuilding, and HD Korea Shipbuilding expects this order to contribute to improved profitability.
Earlier, on the 2nd, HD Korea Shipbuilding secured orders for four liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers—two 90,000-cubic-meter vessels from a Greek shipowner and two 40,000-cubic-meter vessels from an Oceanian shipowner. The contracts are valued at 349.8 billion won and 239.3 billion won, respectively. These ships will be built by HD Hyundai Samho and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180.KS) and delivered sequentially to the shipowners from 2028 through the first half of 2029.
Additionally, on the same day, HD Korea Shipbuilding won orders from an Asia-based shipping company for eight 50,000-ton petrochemical (PC) carriers worth 611.7 billion won. These vessels will be constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Naval and Special Ship Business Unit and delivered to the shipowner by the first half of 2029.
In total, HD Korea Shipbuilding secured orders for 14 ships worth 1.971 trillion won over just two days—the 2nd and the 7th of this month.
"Inquiries for orders across various vessel types including tankers, gas carriers, and container ships continue to come in due to geopolitical risks and rising oil prices," an HD Korea Shipbuilding official said. "We will maximize profitability through selective orders focused on high-value vessels."
