LX International (001120) has received a commendation from the Philippine government for successfully completing environmental restoration at the Lapu-Lapu copper mine.
LX International announced on the 4th that CEO Koo Hyuk-seo received the award from Philippine Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna at the Korea-Philippines Business Forum held at the Conrad Hotel in Manila. CEO Koo attended the event as part of the economic delegation accompanying President Lee Jae-myung's state visit to the Philippines.
LX International acquired the Lapu-Lapu mine in 2008 and systematically carried out all stages of resource development, including exploration, production, mine closure, and environmental restoration. The company launched full-scale environmental restoration work in 2018, implementing specialized rehabilitation programs covering soil stabilization, ecological restoration, and water quality management. In August last year, it obtained official approval from the Philippine government for completing the "Final Mine Rehabilitation and Decommissioning Plan." This marks the first environmental restoration approval in Philippine mining history and the first case of a Korean company receiving official certification for environmental rehabilitation at an overseas mine.
"We were highly recognized for consistently taking responsibility for the entire resource development process from exploration to restoration," LX International said. "It is significant that the Philippine government directly presented an award for the first case in its mining history where environmental restoration obligations were fulfilled."
