Biopharmaceutical production capacity in Incheon's Songdo International City is growing rapidly, driven by the district's expanding bio-cluster.

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority said Sunday that total biopharmaceutical production capacity at the Songdo bio-cluster is projected to reach 2.14 million liters by 2030, up from 1.035 million liters last year.

Production capacity in Songdo has surged from 50,000 liters in 2010 to 330,000 liters in 2015 and 560,000 liters in 2020.

The authority forecast that capacity will reach 1.155 million liters this year once Lotte Biologics completes its first plant with 120,000-liter capacity by year-end.

Samsung Biologics currently operates facilities with 785,000-liter capacity and plans to expand to 1.325 million liters by 2032 through construction of its second bio-campus comprising plants five through eight. Lotte Biologics will sequentially build second and third plants, each with 120,000-liter capacity.

Celltrion, which has 250,000-liter capacity, is constructing a new drug product facility targeted for completion this year, with full-scale production set to begin next year.

The Bio-Process Training Center at Yonsei University's Songdo International Campus, which opened late last year, will train approximately 2,000 bio-industry professionals annually.

"We will develop Incheon into a world-class mega bio-cluster based on our production capabilities and specialized workforce," said Hong Jun-ho, acting commissioner of the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority.
