U.S. President Donald Trump said he had agreed to Iran's request for talks but had notified Tehran that the ceasefire was over.
In a post on his social networking service Truth Social on the 10th, Trump wrote, "Iran asked us to continue talks and we agreed," while adding, "The United States has firmly told Iran that the ceasefire is over." The remarks are seen as formalizing comments Trump made while attending the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in Ankara, Turkey, on the 7th and 8th. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the 8th, Trump had said, "The memorandum of understanding (MOU) on ending the war signed with Iran seems to be over."
Trump's remarks at the time came as the U.S. military carried out consecutive airstrikes on military facilities and other targets inside Iran in response to Iran's attack on the 7th on a civilian oil tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iranian forces retaliated by striking U.S. military bases in other parts of the Middle East, including Bahrain and Kuwait, expanding the clash between the two sides.
