
xAI, the artificial intelligence company led by Elon Musk, has unveiled its latest AI model, Grok 4.5, specialized for coding and AI agent tasks. With OpenAI set to release its next-generation model, GPT-5.6, competition in the AI coding market is intensifying.
According to Reuters on the 8th, xAI launched Grok 4.5 that day, describing it as "the most intelligent AI model available to date." Grok 4.5 is optimized for software coding and AI agent tasks, and was trained using tens of thousands of Nvidia's latest GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs).
xAI explained that "Grok 4.5 is an Opus-level model that is cheaper yet faster and more efficient, and we strengthened data filtering, deduplication, and quality assessment processes to improve data quality," adding that "the AI coding tool Cursor also collaborated with xAI to train Grok 4.5."
Last month, xAI acquired Anysphere, the startup that developed Cursor, in an all-stock deal worth $60 billion (about 90.336 trillion won). The strategy is to strengthen competitiveness in the enterprise AI development tools market through Cursor.
Grok 4.5 can be used immediately through xAI's AI coding agent Grok Build and through the application programming interface (API) of the xAI Console, the Cursor developer portal. The service is scheduled to be offered in the European Union (EU) in the middle of this month.
CEO Musk stressed on X, formerly Twitter, that "Grok 4.5 has Anthropic's Opus-level performance while being faster, more token-efficient, and lower in cost." Grok 4.5 is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna is priced at $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Input tokens refer to data such as text or code fed into the AI model, while output tokens refer to the answers or code the AI generates.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is scheduled to unveil GPT-5.6 on the 10th, after delaying it last month at the request of the U.S. government for a national security review over the potential misuse of powerful AI technology.
