
Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon's subsidiary handling infrastructure and cloud (large-scale storage space connected via the internet) business, has expressed its intention to expand into nuclear power and the defense industry as it participates as a core partner in the Trump administration's national capacity development project, the "Genesis Mission."
As President Trump demanded cutting-edge AI infrastructure and security capabilities to win the artificial intelligence (AI) supremacy battle with China, AWS has effectively positioned itself as an ally by providing GovCloud, a government-only cloud embedded with national security functions. AWS has grasped the trend of AI industry control shifting from companies to the government, while also pursuing a strategy of continuing overseas exports to countries such as the United Kingdom and Singapore.
Dave Levy, AWS Vice President of Worldwide Public Sector, said at the "AWS Summit 2026" held June 30 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., "As the sole cloud provider for the Genesis Mission, the Manhattan Project (the nuclear weapons development program during World War II) of our time, we will supply the highest level of security infrastructure." He added, "We have decided to support research groups with up to $100 million (approximately 155.5 billion won) in AWS credits."
The Genesis Mission, launched by the Trump administration last November, is a national project that integrates the entire United States' supercomputer resources into a cloud-based AI ecosystem. As a public-private project bringing together the capabilities of 17 US research institutions and the private sector, AWS plays a core role in providing cloud and AI infrastructure.
The AWS credit provision announced by AWS means that national laboratories and private partners can utilize AWS's latest researcher-focused AI models and architecture during their research process.
Chris Wright, Secretary of Energy, who attended as a keynote speaker and spoke with Vice President Levy, explained, "It is about taking all the data on nuclear physics, fusion energy, materials engineering, and molecular-level biological systems held by the world's best Nobel Prize-winning factories, and supercharging it with AI to train it." That day, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) under the Department of Energy announced it would store the first Genesis Mission work materials in the AWS cloud.
AWS's next plan is to monopolize the AI infrastructure transition of the US administration and defense sectors based on the Genesis Mission.
AWS announced the Intelligence Community Accelerated Modernization Framework (ICAMF) that day. If intelligence agencies that have existing contracts with AWS migrate to the latest cloud, they will receive credits of up to $1 billion by October 2030. AWS plans to invest up to $50 billion (approximately 77.79 trillion won) in expanding AI and supercomputing infrastructure for US government agencies.
AWS further unveiled its business plans in the defense and defense industry sectors, which have emerged as core industries following the Ukraine war and the Iran war.
AWS announced it would expand the industrial AWS Secret Cloud (ASCI) into the defense sector. Vice President Levy explained, "For the first time ever, US defense contractors can access the same AWS Secret Cloud used by the Department of Defense (Department of War) and utilize full classified work capabilities and services."
The AWS Secret Cloud, certified by the Department of Defense, guides defense companies through the process from Defense Intelligence Agency approval to establishing dedicated private network connections at existing security facilities. When defense companies sign contracts with public institutions, using the AWS cloud means they no longer need to worry about government security concerns. AWS's first client is Northrop Grumman, and AWS will invest up to $20 million (approximately 31.1 billion won) worth of resources over three years for its clients.
AWS is also targeting drug development, health administration, and nuclear power sectors derived from the Genesis Mission. To participate in the Genesis Mission, AWS is developing a digital twin of an AI-based small modular reactor (SMR) with Idaho National Laboratory (INL). A digital twin is a technology that allows manufacturing and performance testing in virtual space without the need for direct experimentation. AWS technology is being used to shorten reactor design cycles, create digital twins for advanced simulations, and develop autonomous reactor operation technology.
One of the Genesis Mission's goals is to use AI to treat intractable diseases such as cancer and to apply it to preemptive disease management for the entire population. AWS is already cooperating in these fields with the UK and Singapore governments, and as the Genesis Mission progresses, opportunities for overseas exports will also expand.
