U.S. President Donald Trump posted a photo from his first summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Truth Social after hinting at a deal with Iran, drawing attention.
At 12:45 p.m. local time Saturday, Trump posted a message saying a deal with Iran would be signed June 14. About an hour later, at 1:53 p.m., he posted a photo of himself walking alongside Kim. The image captured the two leaders strolling through the garden of the Capella Hotel, the venue of their first summit held in Singapore on June 12, 2018.
The post has prompted interpretations that Trump may be signaling interest in diplomacy with North Korea, as tensions with Iran appear set to ease. According to Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, who met Trump at the White House on March 13, Trump showed strong interest in Kim and showcased their rapport, including instructing an aide to bring a photo taken with Kim at Panmunjom during the meeting.
Following the U.S.-China summit held in Beijing last month, the White House announced through a fact sheet that "President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping confirmed their shared goal of denuclearizing North Korea." However, Xi made no mention of denuclearization during a subsequent visit to North Korea. North Korea has rejected the denuclearization agenda and is effectively presenting recognition as a nuclear power as a condition for talks with the United States.
