U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled that a signing ceremony for a war-ending agreement with Iran could be held this weekend. Iran has also said the final approval of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) is highly likely.
"We just made a great deal with Iran on the war," Trump said at a proclamation signing ceremony at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, adding, "Only the final coordination of the documents remains." He continued, "It will be wrapped up within the next few days, and the signing ceremony will probably be held in Europe this weekend," noting, "I will not be able to attend, but Vice President JD Vance will be there." He added that he had spoken with leaders of countries surrounding Iran, including Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, and assured, "The Strait of Hormuz will open immediately upon signing."
Earlier that day, Trump said via his social networking service Truth Social, "Based on the fact that discussions with Iran have gone up to Iran's supreme leadership and received approval, I, as President of the United States, have canceled the airstrikes and bombing against Iran that were scheduled for this evening (the 11th)."
In response, Iran's Fars news agency claimed, "We have not approved any text regarding the initial MOU with the United States," while also asserting, "On the 10th, the mediating country Qatar announced that the United States had withdrawn the additional clauses it had previously demanded." It continued, "Iran has returned to the original draft it had been awaiting final approval on," stressing, "Despite the noticeable shift in the U.S. position, President Trump is packaging it as if Iran had backed down under the pressure of bombing." It added, "Not only has Iran not yet given its final answer, but it is rather the United States that has reverted to its past conditions," explaining, "As the United States has ultimately accepted the original draft, Iran's supreme leadership is also observed to be highly likely to give final approval to the text."
