U.S. President Donald Trump said he would respond to Iran's downing of a U.S. military Apache helicopter. Observers say tensions between the United States and Iran could escalate again.
"I was just informed by our Great Military Authorities that last night a state-of-the-art Apache helicopter, which was patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz, was shot down by the Iranian side," Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday. He added, "The helicopter had two pilots on board, but both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must respond to this attack."
The New York Times (NYT) reported Sunday that an Apache helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz and that the two crew members on board were rescued safely. The NYT said it was not clear whether the crash was caused by an Iranian attack or a mechanical failure.
CNN reported that a U.S. military unmanned vessel rescued the two American service members, and that it was the first time an Apache helicopter had crashed since the U.S.-Iran war.
