U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to hold a meeting at the White House regarding war-end negotiations with Iran.
Trump wrote on his social network service Truth Social on Sunday, local time, that "we will be having a meeting in the Situation Room right now to make a final decision." This is presumed to be a meeting for the final approval of a war-end memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran. Earlier, major U.S. media reported that the United States and Iran had agreed on most of the MOU provisions, leaving only Trump's final approval.
According to the draft MOU conveyed by U.S. media, the two countries agreed to extend the ceasefire for 60 days and place no restrictions on ship passage through the Strait of Hormuz. It also included provisions to eradicate toll collection or attacks in the strait, and a part where Iran agreed to remove all mines from the strait within 30 days. The naval blockade that the U.S. military enforces on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports or coasts will also be lifted after the MOU is signed.
The draft MOU also included Iran's commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. It also specified that Iran's method for handling highly enriched uranium (HEU) would be discussed first during the 60-day ceasefire extension period. In return, the United States promised to discuss easing sanctions and releasing Iran's frozen assets. It also included measures to help Iran begin receiving supplies and humanitarian aid.
Trump also stressed on Truth Social that day that Iran's ban on nuclear weapons, the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz without tolls, and the U.S.-led extraction and destruction of highly enriched uranium buried in Iran would be top-priority conditions. "Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon, or Nuclear Bomb," Trump wrote. "The Strait of Hormuz will be open, IMMEDIATELY, with no toll charges." He added, "Iran must immediately clear, or blow up, the not-so-many remaining mines," and "the Highly Enriched Uranium will be dug up and destroyed by the United States, in close coordination with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."
At the same time, Trump said, "No monetary transactions will take place at all until further notice," signaling that even if an agreement is reached with Iran, the release of frozen assets or supply support that Iran wants will not be carried out immediately.
