The White House said on Wednesday that even if President Donald Trump enters negotiations with Iran, he will only strike a deal that benefits the United States and meets his red lines.
A White House official gave the response to Yonhap News Agency's inquiry about the outcome of a meeting Trump held that day with his senior national security team on talks with Iran. The official emphasized in particular that "Iran can never have a nuclear weapon." The Situation Room meeting reportedly lasted about two hours before wrapping up.
In a Truth Social post the same day, Trump cited as top conditions a ban on Iran's development of nuclear weapons, the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without tolls and Iran's immediate removal of underwater mines, and a U.S.-led excavation and removal of highly enriched uranium buried at Iran's nuclear facilities. He stressed in particular that "until further notice, there will be no monetary transactions whatsoever with Iran," signaling that the release of frozen assets sought by Tehran will not happen anytime soon.
