Dozens of gunshots were fired near the White House, prompting on-site reporters to evacuate in an emergency.
According to CNN on Sunday, a U.S. Secret Service official said the agency had launched an investigation after receiving reports of gunfire on 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, just outside the White House complex.
CNN reported that its own journalists also heard the gunshots at the scene, and that reporters who had been on the North Lawn of the White House quickly moved inside the briefing room.
One reporter said the shots appeared to have come from the direction of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building within the White House complex.
The Secret Service then locked down the briefing room and instructed reporters not to leave the building.
While federal agencies have not disclosed specific details of the incident, Fox News reported that the gunman fired three rounds from a handgun toward the White House before Secret Service agents returned fire and subdued him.
Reuters, citing a law enforcement official, reported that the suspect approached a checkpoint near the White House and opened fire on a police officer, and was transported to a hospital after being subdued. No law enforcement personnel were reported injured.
President Donald Trump was confirmed to be safe. However, a passerby near the scene was shot and taken to a hospital, with their specific condition not yet known.
