U.S. President Donald Trump said he discussed the Iran issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that "we have very similar thoughts on how we want this to end."
According to the White House press pool on Saturday (local time), Trump made the remarks while touring Zhongnanhai in Beijing with Xi. "We don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons. We want the strait to be open," Trump said. "We want that thing to end. It's really ridiculous and it's a little bit strange. That should never happen." The comments are interpreted as signaling that the two sides have reached a common understanding on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
"We've solved a lot of various problems that other people would not have been able to solve," Trump said, emphasizing that "our relationship is very strong." He also said he had "reached a fantastic trade deal with China." The remarks were made with Xi standing beside him as the two leaders toured Zhongnanhai together.
