U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang is part of his economic delegation to China, saying he would call on Beijing to "open up."
Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday that "CNBC incorrectly reported that Jensen Huang was not invited to join the group of the world's top business leaders visiting China," adding, "In fact, Jensen is currently aboard Air Force One." According to the White House press pool, Huang boarded Air Force One in Anchorage, Alaska, the aircraft's refueling stop. Bloomberg reported that Trump called Huang that morning to ask him to join the trip to China, and that Huang joined at Anchorage, where Air Force One refueled.
Trump then presented the list of his economic delegation to China. According to him, the list includes Huang along with Elon Musk (Tesla), Tim Cook (Apple), Larry Fink (BlackRock), Stephen Schwarzman (Blackstone), Kelly Ortberg (Boeing), Brian Sikes (Cargill, the world's largest grain company), Jane Fraser (Citi), Larry Culp (GE Aerospace), David Solomon (Goldman Sachs), Sanjay Mehrotra (Micron) and Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm).
"I will ask President Xi Jinping, who has extraordinary leadership in China, to 'open up' China so that these outstanding talents can fully demonstrate their capabilities and elevate China to a higher level," Trump stressed. "We will be together in a few hours, and that will be the very first thing I ask for then." Trump added, "I have never seen or heard of an idea more beneficial to both countries."
The remarks are interpreted to mean he will meet with Xi and demand that China open its markets. In particular, as many financial figures are included in the trip, observers expect he will request opening related to finance.
