Google is launching a new laptop integrated with its artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini, which activates whenever a user moves the mouse cursor.
Google unveiled the "Googlebook," a laptop that integrates the Gemini model into its Android and Chrome operating systems (OS), on Wednesday, local time.
Googlebook is a new laptop brand succeeding the Chromebook. "If the Chromebook introduced 15 years ago was cloud-centric, the Googlebook is a new laptop centered on AI," Alex Kusher, senior director at Google, said in a blog post.
At the heart of Googlebook is the "Magic Pointer." When a user shakes the mouse cursor on the screen, Gemini is activated and offers context-specific suggestions whenever the cursor points to a particular spot on the screen. It can schedule a meeting based on email dates or combine two images, such as a living room and a new sofa, to visualize them together. Users can also flesh out ideas and complete tasks with just a few clicks.
Regarding the Magic Pointer feature, Google emphasized that while the cursor is the most frequently used tool on a laptop, there has been no major change since the introduction of the right-click function, and that the new feature developed with the Google DeepMind team will significantly transform the user environment.
Google plans to launch Googlebook around this fall in partnership with major hardware companies including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Axios explained that as Apple gains popularity with the launch of its low-cost MacBook Neo, Google is making a bold move in the laptop business by unveiling a model that goes beyond the Chromebook.
