The U.S. military attacked an Iranian oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, and U.S. forces subsequently sustained damage and retreated following an Iranian counterattack, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB and other Iranian media reported Monday.
Iranian state media said the country's air defense system shot down two enemy drones over Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island. Fox News, citing a senior U.S. government official, reported that it was the U.S. military that struck the ports of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm in the Strait of Hormuz. The official added, however, that "this does not mean a resumption of war."
Iran also said its air defense system was activated in the western part of Tehran, the capital.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence a day earlier that a ceasefire agreement with Iran could be reached before his visit to China next week, but tensions are rising again. Amir Hatami, commander-in-chief of Iran's armed forces, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "They will regret this."
