A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture in Japan on Tuesday afternoon. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said the earthquake would have no impact on South Korea.
According to the KMA, the earthquake occurred at 6:28 p.m. The epicenter was located in waters approximately 43 kilometers east-southeast of Wakayama City. The depth of the hypocenter was recorded at 70 kilometers.
A magnitude of 5.7 is considered moderate or above. At such a level, building vibrations or the shaking of objects can be detected near the epicenter. However, because the hypocenter was relatively deep, the energy was widely dispersed, and since the epicenter was located in Japanese waters, the quake was analyzed to have no direct impact on South Korea.
The KMA stated "no domestic impact." No tsunami possibility along Korean coasts, seismic tremors, or additional compound disaster factors have been identified.
