U.S. President Donald Trump said a second round of ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran could take place this weekend, claiming an agreement could be reached within a day or two.
"Iran wants to meet with the United States and wants to make a deal," Trump said in a phone interview with Axios on Tuesday. "The talks will probably take place this weekend, and we will get a deal within a day or two." In a separate interview with Bloomberg, Trump stressed that "most of the major issues have been wrapped up and it will proceed very quickly," adding that "the halt of Iran's nuclear program will be indefinite."
In a phone interview with Reuters, Trump also said that "the United States will work with Iran to dig out and recover the nuclear waste, or enriched uranium, from underground facilities." He dismissed media reports that Washington would pay Tehran $20 billion in return, saying they were "completely wrong" and that "no money will change hands." Axios had reported a day earlier that the two countries were discussing a plan in which the United States would unfreeze $20 billion in funds in exchange for Iran giving up its stockpile of enriched uranium.
