U.S. President Donald Trump said a second round of negotiations with Iran could take place this weekend.
Meeting with reporters at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Monday, Trump said, "There has been significant progress in negotiations with Iran, and we are very close to an agreement." He added, "The next round of talks could be held this weekend." Referring to the "two-week ceasefire" reached on the 7th, he said, "I don't know whether it needs to be extended."
The U.S.-Iran ceasefire is set to expire on the 21st. The two sides met in Islamabad, Pakistan on the 11th for their first round of negotiations, which ended without agreement. Trump said, "Iran has agreed not to possess nuclear weapons and to hand over its enriched uranium to the United States," adding, "The 10-day ceasefire agreed between Israel and Lebanon, which will soon take effect, also includes Hezbollah, the pro-Iran armed faction."
