The war between the U.S.-Israel alliance and Iran offers significant implications not only for energy supply and security but also for the energy transition. The U.S. and Iran reached a dramatic two-week ceasefire agreement on January 7, putting a temporary pause on a conflict that lasted more than a month. However, the energy market has already sustained damage difficult to reverse. The disruption to Middle Eastern liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, in particular, is sending shockwaves through the market. This article examines how a gas supply crisis at the dawn of the "Age of Electricity" — where virtually everything runs on power — will affect the decarbonization trajectory. **A Pillar Supporting Power Demand Expansion Shaken** The war has led to an unexpected LNG supply crisis. Qatar, which accounts for 20% of global LNG supply, has declared force majeure for three to five years. While production does not appear to have completely halted, LNG supply must be considered unstable for the duration of this force majeure period. Natural gas is often called a "bridge fuel." It emits fewer greenhouse gases than coal (approximately 50-60%) or oil (approximately 80%) while compensating for the intermittency of renewable energy generation. From this perspective, LNG supply instability raises two key concerns. First, one of the central pillars supporting power demand expansion is now shaking. Shell projected last month that global LNG demand would surge 54-68% from last year to 650-710 million tons annually by 2040. This underscores LNG's significant role as a stable power source. Combined with renewables, LNG serves as a safety valve for power grids. Could other LNG-producing countries like the U.S. or Australia simply increase production to resolve supply concerns? Reuters reported that both countries are already operating at maximum capacity, leaving little room for expansion. While U.S. LNG companies such as Cheniere and Venture Global are rushing to boost output, analysts say they cannot fill the gap left by Qatar, which had supplied approximately 80 million tons of LNG annually. QatarEnergy and U.S. oil major ExxonMobil began full operations at their massive Golden Pass LNG plant on the Gulf Coast late last month. The facility can produce up to 18 million tons of LNG annually. With Iranian drone attacks damaging 17% of Qatar's domestic production facilities, the U.S. production base has become critically important. Yet Qatar's absence remains keenly felt. **Energy Transition Buffer Zone Also Threatened** The second concern is that gas shortages could expand coal-fired power generation in the short term. Just as the first and second oil shocks increased attention on renewables and nuclear power worldwide, this war will likely accelerate efforts to secure alternative energy sources. However, energy substitution comes at significant cost. It requires heavy upfront investment, government support, and financing for facility expansion. Even in the U.S., high interest rates dealt a blow to the solar industry. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has projected that annual clean energy investment in emerging economies must increase to more than $1 trillion by 2030 to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Existing fossil fuel facilities becoming "stranded assets" adds further costs. For emerging economies, returning to fossil fuels may be a more economical alternative than transitioning to renewables. "Asian countries with no alternative to Middle Eastern LNG may depend on coal for a longer period," said Samantha Dart, co-head of global commodities research at Goldman Sachs. Like most issues, gas supply instability may gradually ease over time. But timing is the problem. Most countries have set 2030 as an interim milestone toward carbon neutrality — now just four years away — and this is precisely when gas supply, the bridge fuel for decarbonization, has become unstable. In this sense, the Qatar-triggered LNG shortage has brought the energy dilemma to the surface. As power demand surges, stable gas supplies have fallen short. The alternative — transitioning to renewables — requires massive upfront costs. And the desperate measure of "returning to coal" could push carbon reduction targets further out of reach.
