U.S. media reported that the United States, Iran and mediating countries are discussing a two-phase negotiation plan consisting of a 45-day ceasefire first, followed by a full end to hostilities. While the chances of a deal are considered low, the effort is drawing attention as it represents the last negotiation attempt before the deadline President Donald Trump set for strikes on Iran's power infrastructure (8 p.m. on the 7th).
Axios reported on the 5th (local time), citing four U.S., Israeli and Middle Eastern sources, that the diplomatic effort is being led by Pakistan, Egypt and Türkiye. The outlet also reported that text messages have been exchanged between Steve Witkoff, Trump's Middle East envoy, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Trump had previously given Iran a negotiation deadline of 8 p.m. on the 6th but extended it by one day. Two sources said a large-scale airstrike operation targeting Iran's energy facilities "has already been prepared," but the deadline was extended by one day "to give Iran a final opportunity to reach a deal."
According to Axios, mediating countries are currently discussing a two-phase agreement consisting of a 45-day ceasefire followed by a complete end to the war. The 45-day ceasefire period could be extended if more time is needed for negotiations. Specifically, mediators are discussing what Iran can do to build trust regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Iran must show goodwill for the 45-day ceasefire to proceed.
Mediators are also reviewing measures the Trump administration could take to prevent a resumption of war. Iran has demanded, as one of its conditions for ending the conflict, international guarantees that the United States and Israel would not launch attacks again. Mediators are also exploring U.S. confidence-building measures that could address some of Iran's demands.
A U.S. government official conveyed the recent atmosphere, saying, "The Trump administration has made several proposals to Iran recently, but Iranian officials have not yet accepted them." Axios reported that mediating countries are currently emphasizing to Iran that "there is no more time for negotiation tactics" and that "the next 48 hours are the last chance to reach a deal and prevent massive national damage."
