The four astronauts aboard Artemis 2, humanity's first crewed mission toward lunar orbit in 54 years, will rely entirely on 189 pre-selected menu items throughout their approximately 10-day mission. With no refrigeration and no possibility of resupply aboard the Orion spacecraft, all food was reportedly loaded before launch.
43 Cups of Coffee, 58 Tortillas: Requirements for a Zero-Resupply Space Diet
According to NASA crew menu data released on the 2nd, the mission's meal plan was designed to balance caloric intake, hydration and nutrition while reflecting individual crew preferences. The mass, volume and power constraints of the Orion spacecraft were also factored in from the design stage.
The beverage list includes more than 10 options. Coffee and green tea are joined by mango and peach smoothies, chocolate and vanilla breakfast drinks, lemonade, apple cider and cocoa. Consumption is limited to two cups per person per day, and NASA estimated 43 cups of coffee will be consumed over the entire mission.
Flavorings and condiments were also generously provided. Maple syrup, chocolate spread, peanut butter, strawberry jam, honey, cinnamon, spicy mustard and five varieties of hot sauce fill the condiment list. Some ingredients were sourced from Canada, weaving international cooperation into the menu.
