Lebanese militant group Hezbollah launched strikes against Israel on Sunday local time, joining retaliatory efforts following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Israel immediately responded with airstrikes across Lebanon, as both sides engaged in escalating cross-border exchanges.
According to AFP and Reuters, Hezbollah said it fired rockets and drones at Israel overnight in retaliation for the "martyrdom" of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"In retaliation for the pure blood of Khamenei, and to defend Lebanon and its people against repeated Israeli attacks, we launched missiles and drones," Hezbollah said in a statement.
The Israeli military said it immediately counterattacked, conducting airstrikes targeting Hezbollah across Lebanon.
Witnesses reported multiple explosions in Beirut, the Lebanese capital.
"In response to Hezbollah's shelling targeting Israel, we have begun striking Hezbollah terrorist organization targets throughout Lebanon," the Israeli military said in a statement.
