The Israeli military said it launched airstrikes on Iran for a second consecutive day in the early hours of Saturday local time.
In a statement, the Israeli military said it "is bombing western and central Iran, targeting approximately 30 sites," adding that "additional airstrikes targeted ballistic missile facilities, missile launchers, military command centers, and air defense systems held by the Iranian terror regime."
The military said "air force fighter squadrons carried out the strikes based on military intelligence," adding that "today's airstrikes further degraded the Iranian terror regime's missile and air defense capabilities." It warned that it would continue to bomb Iran's ballistic missiles and air defense systems.
Foreign media reported loud explosions were heard in the capital Tehran from around 4 a.m.
The Israeli military, together with U.S. forces, conducted multiple airstrikes starting the previous morning on major cities across Iran, including Tehran, Qom, Isfahan, Karaj, Shiraz, and Kermanshah.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the previous day's strikes.
The Israeli military also confirmed that other key defense and security figures were killed in the bombings, including Ali Shamkhani, military advisor to the Supreme Leader; Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Ground Forces; Mohammad Shirazi, head of the Supreme Leader's military office; and Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his intention to continue additional attacks for at least the rest of this week. In a video posted on Truth Social on the 28th, he said, "Not only is Khamenei dead, but this country has been largely destroyed in just one day and virtually reduced to rubble." He added, "Powerful and precise bombing will continue throughout this week and beyond if necessary, without interruption, until our goal of achieving peace throughout the Middle East and beyond is realized."
