The official said the operation had been planned for months and the actual attack date was decided several weeks ago.

The extent of US involvement in the strikes remains unclear. Reuters, citing an Iranian official, reported that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has moved from Tehran to a secure location.
