Tensions are escalating in the Middle East as the United States has approved the evacuation of some staff and their families from its embassy in Israel, following the conclusion of the third round of U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations.
On Sunday local time, the U.S. Embassy in Israel announced on its website that the State Department had authorized the departure of all non-emergency American personnel and their families, citing safety concerns.
The embassy also notified that authorities may restrict travel to certain areas, including Jerusalem's Old City and the West Bank, without prior notice if security issues arise.
"Consider departing Israel while commercial flights remain available," the embassy stated. The State Department had previously issued an evacuation order on the 23rd for American embassy staff and families in Lebanon, also citing security concerns.
As the possibility of airstrikes grows with the U.S. amassing significant military assets near Iranian waters, other countries are also urging their citizens to evacuate.
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that day: "As external security risks facing Iran have risen significantly recently, several countries have issued notices advising their citizens to evacuate. In light of Iran's current security situation, we remind Chinese nationals in the region to strengthen safety precautions and evacuate promptly."
Canada also posted on social media urging its citizens in Iran: "If you can leave safely, leave now."
Meanwhile, Iran expressed a positive view of the third round of nuclear negotiations that concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, the previous day. According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated: "Both sides discussed key elements that could form the basis of an agreement. There is consensus on most elements." His remarks suggested the negotiations took place in a more serious atmosphere than before.
The two sides will continue with fourth-round talks in Vienna, Austria, next week. Foreign Minister Araghchi said: "Technical-level discussions will take place in Vienna, Austria, next week."
