The New York Times reported, citing multiple sources, that Mamdani traveled to Washington D.C. with his staff to meet with President Trump. The meeting was not on the original public schedule. While the specific agenda was not disclosed, some sources said housing construction in New York City would be the main topic of discussion.
The two leaders last met in November following Mamdani's mayoral election victory. Despite exchanging sharp criticisms of each other before their first meeting, President Trump and the Democratic mayor struck a cordial tone when they actually sat down together.
Mamdani, an Indian-American Muslim and progressive politician, was elected New York City mayor on November 4 last year. Initially a little-known state legislator, he gained momentum by tapping into New Yorkers' frustrations over high living costs. His campaign platform included tax increases on the wealthy, rent freezes, free childcare, and free bus service—proposals that prompted President Trump to call him a "crazy communist."
This marks the second meeting between the two leaders since Mamdani's election.
