Why Trump Sides Only with Japan
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has expressed strong commitment to constitutional revision, calling it "the Liberal Democratic Party's official position."
According to Kyodo News and other local media on the 9th, Takaichi appeared on a private broadcast the previous day and stated, "Each party is preparing constitutional amendment proposals." She added, "I would be grateful if concrete proposals could be properly deliberated in the Constitutional Review Committee."
U.S. President Donald Trump also posted on Truth Social shortly after Takaichi's victory became certain, saying, "I hope for success in passing a peace through conservative strength agenda." He added, "The great people of Japan, who voted passionately, will always have my strong support."
In Japan's general election held on the 8th, the LDP secured a landslide victory, far exceeding the two-thirds majority required to initiate constitutional amendments. Prime Minister Takaichi has signaled her intention to transform Japan into a nation capable of waging war through constitutional revision.
However, even if the LDP accelerates constitutional discussions, immediate passage remains difficult. Passing a constitutional amendment requires approval from at least two-thirds of the House of Councillors, which currently has an opposition majority. The next House of Councillors election is scheduled for summer 2028.
