A Studio Ghibli-themed exhibition scheduled to be held in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, has been postponed as China intensifies its "anti-Japan order" (限日令, measures restricting relations with Japan).
The exhibition was originally scheduled to run from January 25 to October next year in Guangzhou.
Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported on Thursday that "the postponement was announced through official social media without any explanation for the reason," adding that "as events related to Japan, including performances, are being suspended one after another in China due to Sino-Japanese tensions, this exhibition appears to have been affected as well."
Nikkei reported that comments expressing disappointment have been posted on social media following the announcement of the exhibition's postponement.
Following remarks by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting intervention in the event of a Taiwan contingency, China has been strengthening its anti-Japan measures, including issuing advisories against travel and study in Japan, controlling cultural exchanges, and suspending imports of Japanese seafood.
On December 28, Japanese singer Maki Otsuki, who performed the theme song for the anime "One Piece," was abruptly removed from the stage while performing at the "Bandai Namco Festival 2025" in Shanghai.
